Frontline workers
Frontline workers are employees who do their jobs on site or face to face with customers rather than at a desk, such as maintenance technicians, room attendants, cleaners, security officers and front-desk staff.
Also known as: deskless workers · frontline staff · field staff
Frontline workers are the people who do the physical, customer-facing or on-site work of an organization. In buildings and hotels they include maintenance technicians, room attendants, housekeeping supervisors, public area cleaners, security officers, concierges, front-desk agents and porters. They are often called deskless workers, because most of their day is spent away from a computer.
Example
A maintenance technician in a mixed-use tower starts the shift at the security office, gets a handful of jobs over the radio, walks between floors with a toolbag, and is stopped several times on the way by residents asking for help. A phone is the only screen they carry. Any tool that needs a laptop, a long form or a fresh login for every job will not get used.
What frontline teams need from software
- Tasks sent to the phone, not waiting on a desktop
- Few taps to accept, update and finish a job
- A quick way to show the work is done, such as a photo
- Clear instructions and an exact location
- Wording that people in a multilingual team can read easily
How it relates to neighbouring terms
- Knowledge workers spend most of the day at a desk, and most workplace software was designed for them.
- Task management for frontline teams is operational: short, location-based tasks where response time matters.
- Shift handover matters more for frontline teams because the work runs around the clock.
- Photo proof of work saves a supervisor from walking over to check.
Where TaskLoop fits
TaskLoop’s staff mobile app is built for frontline work: staff receive tasks with push notifications, accept and update them, and complete them with optional photo proof and a completion timestamp. Supervisors follow progress on the dashboard instead of over the radio. See staff app.
